Success Essentials

The invention of the incandescent bulb remains one of history’s most inspiring stories of persistence. From Humphry Davy in 1802 to Thomas Edison in 1879, repeated success and failure produced many variations before Edison finally refined the design into the form we recognize today. Edison famously said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Many of life’s failures come from people who do not realize how close they are to success when they give up. Without Edison’s perseverance and optimism, his efforts would have ended in obscurity—even if few would believe today that, without his invention, we might still be relying on candles or oil lamps.

The Way of Santiago

What, then, are we really talking about? What is the foundation of success? Many would agree that if we explore success through a personal experience like, for example, the famous Camino de Santiago in Spain, we may begin to find some answers.

I’m sure you’ve heard of it. It is a beautiful adventure. If you have done it, you would agree that it is not easy. There are five famous routes, each with different terrain and varying levels of difficulty. You can walk the full Camino—about 800 kilometers along the French and Castilian route—or complete the minimum 100 kilometers required to receive a certificate.

On the day we arrived, 2,600 people completed the pilgrimage. From our own experience—and from the people we met along the way—we learned three essential values: commitment, determination, and resilience.

Commitment — choosing the goal and staying faithful to it day after day; without it, you’ll never begin.

Each stage is shaped by the number of kilometers you must walk in a day. That structure demands planning, discipline, and a decision to keep going day after day. It is a commitment to your goal. Rain or shine, we crossed paths with the same people each morning. Their consistency built friendships, momentum, and a rhythm that carried us all forward.

Determination — pushing through difficulty once obstacles appear.

Many pilgrims walk despite physical limitations that would discourage even the boldest travelers. Hans, a retired 82-year-old German with a prosthetic leg, was one of them. We passed him day after day—and on the final day, we found him in Santiago, enjoying a beer.

Resilience — the ability to endure and adapt when faced with real adversity.

One afternoon, we met a Canadian woman in her sixties who had developed painful blisters by the third day. We helped arrange a taxi to take her into town so she could be treated. The next morning, we saw her again—walking more slowly, but smiling. She told us, “I didn’t come this far to stop now.”

However, values alone do not fully explain success. They matter deeply, but they do not tell the whole story. Beneath every success lies something more than values. What, then, truly drives success?

What Drives Success

We often admire people for their success, intelligence, or talent. But have you ever stopped to think about what truly makes a person stand out? We are not talking about pretenders, movie stars on a red carpet, or athletes celebrating a championship.

Many think of success as the pinnacle of achievement, often measured mainly in terms of wealth and power. However, true success is shaped by vocation, character, and motivation. Anyone can succeed in life if they understand how to develop these three qualities.

Vocation

Every person is gifted with a unique skill, capacity, or calling. Often revealed through our preferences, interests, or circumstances, vocation is not always obvious, and not everyone can afford to plan their future clearly. Still, there are promising alternatives—sometimes hidden—that require us to adapt, face challenges, and take unexpected turns as we grow in our profession or occupation.

What matters is knowing what we are good at, gaining knowledge, and learning how to redirect ourselves when opportunity appears.

Character

Not everyone gives character the importance it deserves. Yet character is strength, versatility, and adaptability. It does not come effortlessly; it must be developed. There are five areas we must cultivate: intellectual agility, emotional balance, ethical principles, drive, and social abilities. We identify what is lacking and take deliberate steps to grow.

Character involves a process of transformation that cannot be neglected, because what we become matters greatly. This process is as natural as moving from childhood to adolescence, growing into adulthood, and eventually gaining the wisdom that comes with age. We build character throughout our lives, but like an old car, it always needs maintenance.

Motivation

What gives meaning to life? What does direction in life require? How do we chart a course toward worthwhile achievements? In other words, what fills life with purpose, and how do we guide ourselves toward relevance?

Motivation is purpose and direction. Without it, it is difficult to accomplish anything. Yet only positive aims—like integrity, the good, the truth, and the welfare of others—can genuinely sustain us; anything else eventually leaves us unsatisfied.

What kind of value can genuinely motivate us? Something beyond ourselves. Selfish aims lead only to other selfish aims, creating a neverending cycle that leads nowhere. By contrast, family, love of country, community, friendship, and other noble purposes fill the gap in the human heart.

It is not as difficult as it may seem. Vocation, character, and motivation form the path to true success: a clear understanding of what we must achieve or correct, the confidence to pursue it, the discipline to take the necessary steps, and a genuinely optimistic outlook. Together, these make us winners, no matter what difficulties we may encounter along the way, no matter what stage in our path we find ourselves in.
